Nets Baltics and Tapaya partner to drive Contactless softPOS Payment Acceptance

Nets and Tapaya, a Prague-based certified payment infrastructure provider, today announce an agreement to develop a softPOS service for merchants across the Baltic region.

The service will enable merchants of all sizes in the region to turn any device into a payment terminal that can accept contactless payments, via Tap to Pay, with no extra hardware or complexity.

Global softPOS transaction values are projected to reach $540 billion by 2030, up from $23.9 billion in 2025. Such significant growth is expected as softPOS enhances the payment experience for both merchants and consumers:

  • For merchants, softPOS offers a highly accessible, and easy to set up and operate payment solution. They can turn any smart device they own into a reliable, secure and convenient payment terminal, at a lower cost relative to traditional POS hardware solutions. In-store, softPOS also untethers staff from the checkout, allowing them to guide customers through the entire shopping experience, from browsing through to purchase.

  • Consumers can use their preferred digital and contactless payment methods with more merchants. This is particularly useful when purchasing from smaller mobile merchants – such as market stall vendors, plumbers, gardeners or taxis – for whom dedicated, mobile and digital terminals have been cost-prohibitive. In-store, softPOS is also used to 'queue-bust', enabling customers to make purchases on the shop floor, without having to queue at the checkout.

As part of the agreement, Tapaya will provide the software that turns ordinary devices into certified payment terminals. Nets Baltics will be responsible for the processing of transactions that use the softPOS solution, providing the highest Service Level Agreements levels in the market and ensuring PCI and card scheme requirements are met.

Laura Ďorďová, CEO of Tapaya comments: “We are very excited to announce our partnership with Europe's leading paytech. At Tapaya, we believe that for merchants, accepting payments should be as simple as turning on a light. By combining our comprehensive SDK with Nets' proven processing capabilities, we achieve this vision. Merchants will be able to start taking payments in four simple steps: simply onboard, download, transact and get paid".

In addition to offering softPOS services, Nets Baltics and Tapaya also plan to explore further opportunities in the larger Electronic Cash Register (ECR) ecosystem, serving large-scale card transactions.

Kalle Vaalma, CEO of Nets Estonia AS & Head of Baltic region comments: “More businesses are turning towards self-service payment terminals and kiosk solutions for payment acceptance. Whether it's in supermarkets, car parks, fast-food restaurants or train stations, the future of in-store consumer payments looks to be self-service. We're excited to work with Tapaya to make digital acceptance more accessible for more merchants, and to enhance in-store payment experiences to drive real business growth."

Nets and Tapaya plan to launch the softPOS payment solution to merchants from the beginning of 2027.
